I got divorced. My tax form has my married last name but its legally my maiden which do I file under?
File under what ever is legal. If your divorce decree states your last name was returned to your maiden name then that is what you file under. If it doesn't then your last name is still your married name.
There possibly might be a form to fill out for that.My tax form has my married last name but its legally my maiden which do I file under?
File under whatever name is on your social security card. The IRS compares the numbers and names with ss records, and if they don't match, your return will be rejected.
If you haven't changed your name back with ss, file under your married name, wait a month or so, then change it with ss, then next year file under your legal name.
File using the name on your Social Security card. This will save some hassle.
When I was married, my ex didn't change her name. The IRS sent us a notice disallowing her personal exemption. This was resolved with a phone call.
You file with whatever last name is on your social security card. when efiling the irs matches your social with you year of birth and last name on your SS card. Hope that helps!!
